By the time most of us got home and in our own beds, it was probably close to 1:30 or 2:00 AM. That was about 26 hours since most of us had really slept. Even then it was only for about 1 1/2 hours. I really envy those who can sleep on a plane, or anywhere for that matter.

It was truly a great week of spreading the Word in Linden, Guyana. I would like to thank all those that made this effort possible, from the leadership and members of Hoover Church of Christ, to the local churches in Guyana at Burnham Drive and Amelia's Ward. But, a special thank you goes out to the following people who gave of their time and hearts to endure the many hours of work and travel to share the Gospel with those seeking the Truth: Glenn Till Jr. (From the USA......that's sort of inside for those of us on the trip), Joel and Che' Abbott, Wes Blankenship, Matt Trousdale, Alana Lamar, Tiffany Roberts, Paul and Tara Merryman, Kathleen Eiring, Mercedes Lawrence, Suzanne Clelland, and myself.

For the week, we conducted over 80 bible studies with over 90 people. For the evening spiritual maturity classes there were 871 people that attended. That is an average of 174 people per night.

So many hearts and souls were touched this week, including all of us who went. There was restoration to the church, and people reaching out to the church for prayers and encouragement.

At night our topics of study were based on ways of Pleasing God. A different message each night. The lesson I taught was Fearing God and Pleasing Him. Something I was reminded of while preparing for this lesson is that if the church truly walks in the fear of God, not only will it please Him, the church will grow, or multiply. Consider what Luke wrote in ACTS 9:31 " So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied."

Many seeds sown for the Kingdom this week. May God give the increase.
Time to go home. It is 12:59 AM here in Linden, Guyana. We are loading the many suitcases in a van waiting to load ourselves into another one, for the 50 minute ride to Georgetown to board our plane. Needless to say, it is a slow move this morning. While some of us slept for a hour or so, others stayed awake. I haven't yet decided which was better.

It was definitely a great end to our week here in Guyana. With many more bible studies during the day, we finished with an attendance of 225 people tonight at the spiritual maturity classes. That sets an all time new record for people interested in sharing in the word of God, at least in our evening worship.

As we begin to travel back to the states in just a few minutes, please keep us in your prayers for safe travels. Your thoughts have been coveted all week.
We are fortunate to have the medical facilities, and conditions, that we do in th USA. I am glad that we get to go and visit with the patients here. We pray with them and wish them well. And, they seem very grateful that we would spend our time with them. Thursday of this trip each year is always a great day.

After studying 18 lessons with 22 people today, we barely had time to rest up before we headed to the hospital and then to the nightly classes. There were 193 people in attendance tonight, that included many people from the neighboring area that normally don't attend church. The adult and children visitors really have enjoyed themselves this week.

With one more day of studying with people, I feel we are in store for a great evening of fellowship and worship Friday evening, before heading home EARLY Saturday morning. More on that later.

Continue to keep us in your thoughts as we labor in the vineyard.
We were able to conduct 18 Bible studies today with 18 different people. They were all really good lessons. Of course, anytime you sit down and study the Word with someone, it is a good lesson.

Tonight, for the evening classes, there were 187 people in attendance. A great number on pace to break a record by Friday, of 217 set last year.

Tomorrow will be a good day for us. One we all look forward to. We always go on Thursady evening before our nightly classes, to visit every patient in the local hospital. We encourage them. We pray with them and we will leave them some fruit. For the children, we give lots of Beanie Babies. It is a very humbling experience for us.

I would like to post pictures, but for some reason my imaging host is not letting me upload to this blog. I have never had an issue with that before, and I am just technologically challenged to not figure it out.

Continue to pray for the work here with the local church. Two more long days of work then heading back to the States early Saturday morning.
To tell the truth it is every year we come here at this time. But, this year it does seem to be overly, uh, wet. Yes raining a lot! But you know what? With the clouds coming and going, the breeze and the rain, we really have been cooler here than back home in Hoover, knock on wood. It has been fairly comfortable for just north of the equator in June/July.

Despite the rain, we had good turnouts tonight. There were 146 people in attendance for our ongoing nightly spiritual maturity classes. I hope that trend continues. We had great one on one bible studies today as well. Our group conducted 17 studies with 22 people. We have continued studies lined up for tomorrow and hopefully beyond. Unfortunately the week will end way too fast, but the local church will definitely follow up with all those where the seeds were sown.

As you continue to pray for our effort here in Guyana, pray for those affected by the terrorist actions in Turkey. This radical ideology has got to be defeated. Hopefully, the love of Christ will prevail in these people's lives before it is too late for them.
It is a report and reflection on the ladies day that the local churches had here in Guyana this past Saturday. Since we arrived Friday night, the ladies traveling with us from Hoover were able to attend and participate. Thank you Tiffany!

On our first full day in Guyana, we began with a Ladies' Day at the Burnham Drive church of Christ. There were between 150 and 200 ladies in attendance. The lessons were edifying, and the singing was fantastic. The topic for our ladies day was "Beauty Shop," stemming from I Peter 3:3-4 which states:

"Do not let your adorning be external - the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear. But let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious."

We were able to hear four lessons from members of the church in Guyana. Singing was abundant and the church members made delicious lunches for everyone in attendance. Our own members helped when possible and were able to deliver gifts to all of those in attendance, for which they were very grateful. The Hoover members who have previously been to Guyana were greeted by old friends, and those of us who are new were welcomed with hugs and smiles. It was a great start to kick off our week!

It seems like we just rolled out of bed, and we are about to wind things down for the day again. It was a good first day, even though many of the studies that were already scheduled were either no shows, or didn't have the time today. While some were rescheduled, we set up new studies with individuals seeking the Word. In all today we had 12 studies with 18 people. I expect that number to grow each day as we go through the week.

As for the evening spiritual maturity classes, we had 120 in attendance. Not too bad for day one, especially since it has been raining like crazy here, and a lot of people do not have personal transportation, so they have to walk. I do expect, if history is any indication, that the attendance will increase throughout the week as word spreads the community.

We are really looking forward to the rest of the week, and we ask for prayers for open hearts and minds for the people that are seeking the Truth.
Some of our group from Hoover went to Amelia's Ward where Joel lead Bible Study followed by Wes presenting the sermon. Of course, all of this followed much singing. Myself and Glenn lead Bible study and worship at Burnham Drive, and I tell you, after 8 years of me coming here, it is always great to come back and connect with our extended church family. I have watched some of these people go from kids to young adults and I am encouraged at how faithful they remain to the body of Christ.

We are all looking forward to a great week door knocking during the day and leading maturity classes at night. I am a little more excited this year, because it is the fist time I have ever had the privilege to go on a mission trip with my wife Suzanne, AND my daughter Mercedes, at the same time. As a bonus, Suzanne's sister, Kathleen, came along this time too. So a lot of my direct family is with me, along with my church family. Even though I have a little more responsibility with more family members to look out for and return home safely with, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.

Well, maybe I better wait until the end of the week before I decide that. 😄

Thankfully, all 13 of us made it safely to Linden, Guyana. We finally got in bed after midnight (for old folk like me, that's waaaay past my bedtime), and slowly made our way up to breakfast this morning.

I may be weird, but I cannot sleep on an airplane (I envy that super power some people harness). So after almost 24 hours of being awake and travel, my body hurts. My eyes hurts. My mood hurts. Did I say my body hurts? Turning 50 a few months back was great and I am blessed, but watching the younger people this morning get up and seemingly move about with such ease left me jealous and determined. I will not let them see me struggle at all. I will be an inspiration for the younger folks, that maturing in years is easy and painless. Boy is the joke on them.......I don't know, maybe that is mean. Maybe I should caution them to take care of themselves and pace themselves. We'll see how the week goes. 😇
Please pray for us this week as we are here to sow the seeds of God's Word, that He will give the increase. Pray also for all of those here in Linden, Guyana, that they be receptive to the Gospel. I plan to post a daily update on our effort and hope to show a few pictures or short videos as bandwidth allows. Thank you so much for your continued thoughts.

Well here it is, and we are all trying to pack and get ready to head to the airport at 1:00 AM Saturday.

It has been an absolutely great week. Lots of studies, including today, and 6 baptisms. Three of the baptisms happened today. It was great that all of these individuals decided to put on Christ. The seeds were sown, and God is giving the increase. In the coming days and weeks, the local church at Burnham Drive will follow up on the many studies that were started with people here. We pray that God will continue to give the increase.

Tonight we set a record with 217 people attending services. It was an awesome evening that was successful due to so many peoples hard work and dedication. Thanks to all that made this mission effort possible.

I say it every year, but as much as we will miss everyone down here in Guyana, we are all ready to get to our homes and see our families. So, in about 2 hours from the time that I write this, we will start the long journey home. We should be back in Birmingham by 10:00 PM local time. I will try to check in as we travel through Miami and/or Atlanta, but if not......
After all the rain yesterday, today came the heat. We were definitely reminded that we are close to the equator here, very hot today. As everyone is feeling great, we still have to reach back and grab that extra energy this time of the week. We probably are relying on adrenaline more than not at this point, but we will preserver nonetheless. We held 23 studies with 17 people today. Somewhat fewer than the last few days, but by this time of the week, we are down to some serious salvation studies. And, we are taking our time.

The best news of the day, is that a new sister in Christ was added to the church. Ms. Yvonne Marshall was baptized into Christ. Glenn Till and Quincy Collins had been studying with her when she chose to make that decision. Praise God. There are several more people that are very close to making that decision as well. Pray that God will continue to give the increase.

Tonight we all ran by the hospital and visited, and prayed with patients. We were able to give them fruit baskets and some information about the church. This is always one of my favorite times of the week.

At class tonight, you could definitely tell it wasn't raining, as 184 people attended. If we surpass 200 Friday night, we will set a new record. We are blessed to be a part of this great community revival.

By this time Friday night, we will be packing and grabbing an hour or two of sleep before heading to the airport to come home. Continue to keep,us in your prayers.

'til next time..........
It wasn't a long climb because the week is going by so fast. It will even go by faster the next two days, and before we know it, we will be making the 2:00 AM drive to the airport in Georgetown to catch our flight back to the States Saturday morning.

Today started off great. A man name Patrick that Glenn and Quincy studied with, decided to obey the Gospel. He has an interesting story in that he has been a Rasta for some time, and after a recent accident where he wa badly injured, he started questioning the truth. He was seeking, and the right teachers came along to show him the good news. Thank God.

The rest of the day went like the others so far, good studies with great people. Today we held 26 lessons with 27 people, with more lined up for tomorrow and beyond.

All day we got to experience what I think of when I think of the tropics, wet, rainy, humid conditions. It rained more today than I can remember the last seven years I have been here. Most of us stayed soaked, but feeling good about sharing the Word. As the night classes rolled around, only 120 people were in attendance. I am blaming that on the weather. A lot of people walk here, and don't drive, so the rain will keep folks in doors. Hopefully, with better weather, we will have more people come to services tomorrow night.

Thursday will be a busy day for sure. We will go to the market early in the morning to buy fruit and juice that we will take to the hospital to give to the patients and hospital staff, tomorrow night for encouragement. There is a planned road closing at the only bridge crossing the river tomorrow, so,we will have to take boats back and forth across the river to go to and from the area of town we are working. It should be an interesting day. Looking forward to it, for sure.

That is the theme for this weeks nightly lessons held for the adults at Burnham Drive. What things in your life could separate you from the love of Christ? Christ's love for us will always be there. It may be better to ask, what will separate us, from OUR love for Christ? The way we live, worldly possessions, friends, social media, our jobs, even family, can get in the way of our love for Christ if we are not careful. We need to be ever diligent against the stumbling blocks that Satan throws in front of us. There may be times we get discouraged when doors are shut, and people choose not to be receptive to the Word, but we cannot let that frustration sour our attitude form sharing the love of Christ with others. This week, most of the people we meet are very receptive. There will be some, however, that basically shut the door on you. Jesus says to go and spread the Word, to share the Good News, not, go and MAKE people accept the Word. That is their own decision. So far this week, we are doing great work here. Today we held 27 studies, with 25 different people. All willing, and open to receive Gods message.

Tonight we had a great crowd at the evening classes. We had 150 people in attendance compared to 97 last night. That is a huge increase, and an encouragement to see that kind of interest and involvement from the community.

As I write this, at 10:24 PM local time, the preacher, Nigel Milo is taking a lady to the river to be baptized. Praise the Lord. No matter what hour of the day it is, when someone makes that decision to put on Christ in baptism, it is indeed a wonderful occasion. What great way to end the day!
We definitely hit the ground running. Everyone is working very hard reaching out to the local community to spread the word of God. Today we studied with 22 people, conducting 24 lessons, and we have more already scheduled for tomorrow and beyond.

Tonight, the first set of maturity classes was held at the church building, and 97 people were in attendance. I know that by Friday night, if history proves true here, that number will most certainly double. That will be a great ending to a great week.

Being such a long day, we had our quick round table discussion of the day's events, a quick snack, then those of us who lean more toward the senior side of things quickly prepped for bed. Of course we will also be the ones up and ready to go, with both eyes open. Oh to be able to hang out and laugh with friends late into the evening again. Eh, not really. Sleep here we come.
It was the first meeting ever at the new church building at Amelia's Ward, and it was a fantastic service. Over 170 people attended worship there and were able to listen to two men from Hoover, Joel Abbott and Wes Blankenship bring the Bible Study and Sermon for today. I was told they did an outstanding job and encouraged everyone there.

The reason I say, I was told is, Glenn Till and myself, along with Suzanne, went to the Burnham Drive church and worshiped with them. I was blessed to be able to lead the Sunday School Bible study, and Glenn brought the message of the hour. There were 51 people in attendance. We actually started at the Amelia's Ward congregation at 8:30 then went to Burnham Drive to finish there about 2:00 PM. That's 5.5 solid hours of wonderful singing, praise and worship. Probably the most I have done in one stretch in a long time, but it was great (Chuck don't get any ideas). We arrived back to the house in time to eat a wonderful lunch that the rest of the group was so gracious to leave for us. A quick nap ensued, then it was off to evening worship.

As usual we all gather at night to eat a quick meal (actually) a snack, and reflect on the day's events and what tomorrow holds for us. Monday we will hit the ground running for sure, we will knock many doors, touch many hearts, and we will be encouraged by the community that we will immerse ourselves in. I promise, it will be Friday before we know it, and we will be packing to head back home. We all look forward to a great week and we ask for, your continued prayers and support.
We came to Guyana a day earlier than we normally have in the past. First let me say, that we all got here safe and sound, and healthy, but as usual, tired from travel. But let me tell you what that early arriving time meant. It meant having today to rest a little bit more, and put the finishing touches on our lessons we will teach at church Sunday morning. Normally we would arrive at about 11:30 on Saturday night, after having travelled all day. We then would try to grab some sleep and get up a few hours later to eat breakfast then go to church, not having much time to catch our breath. I vote for the one day early method on traveling for this mission effort.

I must admit, the guys had a little more time to rest today, as the ladies attended a ladies day at the Burnham Drive congregation from 10:00 until 3:00. They had to prepare and give presentations to almost 200 ladies from around the surrounding area. Slightly more tired, but extremely blessed they are from having participated.

It wasn't all rest for us guys. The Amelia's Ward congregation has recently built a new church and we were recruited to spread piles of sand around to fill in the low spots in the lot around the building. I'm not surprising anyone by saying, that after a while, wet sand is just plain heavy. Fortunately there were 6 of us guys able to share time shoveling. More importantly, Glenn and Quincy were able to go conduct a Bible study, and share Gods word, the main reason we are here.

This "day early" gave us all time to reflect, fellowship, prepare and rest up for the upcoming week of service to the Lord here in Linden, Guyana, that will go by like a flash of lightning. I can't wait to see what tomorrow may bring.
Well, here it is, the night before we leave for Guyana. I suspect everyone is mostly packed and lessons are mostly prepared. No matter to what level of preparedness, this mission effort will be a success. There have been challenges and excitement the last 7 years that I have gone on this trip, but they have all been successful. No doubt, it being God's will, this will be a great trip and the seeds of the Kingdom will be sown, and many souls will be touched. Please pray for our safety, and that God will give the increase.
Final Report from GuyanaEven though the entire week here in Linden, Guyana was awesome, the end of the week, Friday, was even better. Our day started out like all of the rest of them. We conducted 18 studies with 19 people, and ended with 4 people obeying the gospel, putting on Christ in baptism. A great end to a great week.

Friday night's worship was great as well. The singing seemed exceptionally spiritual and emotional, and, all of the classes were excellent and well attended. We broke the record for our attendance with 205 people coming and participating. I thought at the beginning of the week we might, but the last couple of nights had leveled off a little. I was glad to see that we reached the prediction of 200.

This week for us comes around once a year, and after a 20 hour travel day to get settled in, you think you will have plenty of time to get your work done. It is, however, the fastest week you could ever experience. It starts and is over in the blink of an eye and we are on our way back home. Although we will miss everyone we met and worked with here in Guyana, we miss everyone back home as well. For 2014, our work on the ground in Guyana is done, but next year will be here before we know it and we will be working alongside the brethren at Burnham Drive Church of Christ once again.

Our team that traveled from the States was awesome and I am proud to have worked with all of them. Shout out to Glenn Till Jr., Joel and Che' Abbott, Wes and Pam Blankenship, Sean and Mary Mcallister, Will Spurlin and my wife Suzanne. It was such a special blessing to have experienced this trip with all of them. It was a very special honor to have worked all week with Suzanne by my side. Her being here made this trip even more wonderful.
Today, however, has been just as much of a blessing as every other day. Our group studied with 19 people, conducting 20 lessons. We all have plenty more tomorrow. Some will be The Plan Of Salvation, while others more beginner lessons. The local church at Burnham Drive will be following up and watering the seeds we have planted.

Early tonight, we made our annual trip to the hospital to leave gifts of fruit, and juice, and tracts for every patient there. We prayed for many at bedside, and encouraged them. They were all extremely grateful for us visiting them. It really is a privilege for us to be able to spend a few minutes with every patient in the hospital ( about 65 patients this go around). I especially look forward to that trip every time I come to Guyana.

After the hospital visit, we made our way to the church building for our evening classes. As usual, it was a great evening. We had an attendance of 156 people. Not quite as high as I had expected, but good nonetheless. We may not reach the 200 that I hoped for at the beginning of the week, but I don't know if we could fit everybody in there any way. We would try however.

Continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers, that we will have a safe and productive rest of our mission trip. Also pray that we will have a safe, and timely, trip home. We have heard murmurings today that the Caribbean Airlines pilots are on strike. Maybe it will all be worked out before our plane is supposed to leave early Saturday morning.
I'm sorry I had to do it. Wow a great day, but a seemingly long day. Everyone one of us were a little busier today with more bible studies, for each of us to conduct. In total, we studied 18 lessons with 22 people. We are starting to get to the point where some of the people we are teaching, are realizing they are needing to make some decisions with their life. We hope and pray that they make the right decisions soon for their sake. Tomorrow we all will continue our ongoing studies. We ask for prayers, that as we sow the seed, God will give the increase.

Tonight was interesting. All of the power in Linden, Guyana went out about 5:40 PM and did not come back on until about 10:15 PM. In other words, we conducted all of the evening classes by flashlight and lanterns. Did I say that with no power, meant no fans? We had 150 people attend classes tonight, which was good considering we were in a blackout. With 150 packed into a room about 25 feet by 40 feet, singing for 45 minutes generated a lot of body heat and energy. Yes, slightly warm for a couple of hours, but the worship and praise seemed extra special by all of that "candle" light. The locals here are used to blackouts, so no big deal to them. But even they said it was extremely warm, no actually the preacher said it was down right hot. But all is well that ends well. The power is back on as I type this out, and the air conditioner window unit is now pulling double duty. Oh how spoiled we are in America. Good night all.
We have just three more days and we will be heading home. At the beginning of the week, it always feels like we have plenty of time to reach as many people as possible. But time really flys when you stay busy, non-stop.

Today we all hit the ground running. While a few of us were rapped up with study after study, some of us had a little time to reach out and door knock between our scheduled studies. But it was all non-stop I promise. We ended up conducting 15 studies with 21 different people today. We are definitely reaching a lot of people.

Tonight our nightly classes continued as planned. There were definitely more in attendance, with 153 people participating, up from 111 last night. At this rate we will for sure surpass 200 by Friday. I look forward to reporting on what we are doing each day, and want all of you to know that we appreciate the prayers and support. Without that, it would be difficult for us to work as diligently as we are. Thanks again.
We're not sure where our door knocking will start, and what kind of studies we will have, or, how interested the people we visit will be to study God's word. We can be a little apprehensive on this first day, but it always turns out to be a great day. In total, we conducted 18 bible studies with 15 different people. We all have more lessons set up with people tomorrow, and look for that to continue for the rest of the week.

While we are out door knocking and studying with people, we are also inviting them to nightly classes that we are hosting at the Burnham Drive Church of Christ building, each evening from Monday through Friday. We have classes available from toddler through 5, 6 to 9, 10 to 12, teens and then the adults. All of the mission team participate in these classes in one form or another. We start out at 6:30 PM, sing for 45 minutes and then hold our classes until 8:00 PM or so. It is always a great night of worship and Bible study.

Usually, the first night we draw about 80 persons, and grow from there each night having doubled that by the time we are finished on Friday. There is no reason to expect any different result this year, as it has been fairly consistent the last 5 years that I have been participating in this great effort. Tonight, we had 111 people in attendance. By Friday, I won't be surprised if we top 200.

Please pray we have continued success as we sow the seeds of God's word the rest of this week. Tomorrow I plan to post more pictures of our studies, and classes that we are teaching. And I look forward to an awesome week here in Linden, Guyana.

Shout to The Lord

When you think about it, it's kinda funny how the human mind works. It seem seems like it's so selective on what information it retains and discards.

There are moments every week that we have to stop and try to remember what we went into the kitchen for. Or, as soon as you see your garage door closing, you remember you forgot something on the table (or, in my personal case, you drive one block away and forget if you even closed the garage door at all.)

At the same time, sometimes it seems as if it's impossible to forget some things. The times when you said or did something really foolish, or the questionable fashion choices that you made 20 years ago. Why can't we forget those things?!

When I think back on my mission trips, one thing sticks out: the memories of the annoyances of the long travel days are quickly replaced by the joys experienced once you arrive. On Saturday, we traveled for nearly 20 straight hours. After worshipping with the brethren here in Linden on Sunday morning, those 20 hours in travel really didn't seem that bad after all.

At home, I fall into the routine of going to church every time the doors are open, but sometimes forgetting the whole point of going to the church building is to worship. I go to church, but sometimes I don't worship.

The church here gets it. The singing, the prayers, the dedication to Bible study, and the emphasis on Bible classes for little ones are just on a whole different level than what I sometimes give on a typical Sunday morning. I keep a portion of my attention and focus on myself, while giving some to God for a few hours. When this church here meets, it seems as if they focus completely on God.

We came to Guyana to teach, but I was the one learning this morning. Christianity is about worshipping God with all of our hearts, minds, and soul. Sometimes I get so focused on worshipping in truth that I neglect to worship in spirit, but this morning reminded me of the importance of both. If there is one part of Guyana that I bring back with me, I want to make sure it's the spirit of worship that they use here.

Please continue to pray for the Hoover team and the church here in Linden. We'll see all of you soon!
